Renfield Is Getting His Own Movie

By RodneyHatfieldJr for Movies

First, let me say that Renfield is definitely a Universal Monster. Look at his qualifications: Psychotic, manic, sadistic, and let's be honest a cannibal too. Besides very few vampire movies have decided not to have a familiar like Renfield. Plus I am a huge Dwight Fry fan. Tell me another person who has been in Frankenstein, Dracula, Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein, Son of Frankenstein, Ghost of Frankenstein, Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman. He is also the arch-type for the hunchback lab assistant. So if the hunchback lab assistant can be a Universal Monster, then so can Renfield.

Universal Pictures had been developing a solo movie for Dracula’s henchman Renfield, based on a pitch from “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman (who is producing). The latest reporting is that Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War) is set to direct.

Ryan Ridley (“Rick and Morty”) wrote the script. I don’t know about this one. Other than R&M, I don’t really know anything about him. Newcomer Samantha Nisenboim will executive produce the film.

The premise is simple. In the original Dracula novel, Renfield was an inmate at a lunatic asylum who was thought to be suffering from psychotic delusions but is actually a servant of Dracula.

Actual plot details are currently unknown. So it could be anything from a period piece to a modern-day setting. I have always wondered with all the different takes we have had on Dracula, we never had a Renfield film.
