OK, enough state pride. Saban announced they have acquired the North American rights to Mike P. Nelson’s horror reboot Wrong Turn. Mister Smith Entertainment is handling worldwide sales of Wrong Turn: The Foundation.

dread

For those who are not privy to the franchise, permit me to give a small bio. The franchise has 6 different movies where cannibals terrorize people(mostly really stupid) in the beautiful mountains of West Virginia. Simple and straight forward. A classic Sawney Bean retelling.

In this new version, we have friends hiking the Appalachian Trail are confronted by 'The Foundation', a community of people who have lived in the majestic mountains for hundreds of years. Starring Charlotte Vega (The Lodgers), Matthew Modine (Stranger Things), Damian Maffei (Haunt), and Bill Sage (Hap and Leonard). We also received some more news about WT this week. It is officially rated “R” by the MPA. For strong bloody violence, grisly images, and pervasive language. Sounds like a party to me.

The horror genre has often explored stories of characters who embark on road trips which go horribly wrong, from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre to The Hills Have Eyes to House of 1000 Corpses. Given the inherent trepidation, people have of road trips and the locales they might find themselves stuck in, the Wrong Turn franchise has long heightened that fear to an intense degree, with this new take on the matter possibly bringing with it more themes of the fear of an "other" in unfamiliar territory.

Wrong Turn is one of those enigmas of film. Yes, it has horrible reviews and ratings from critics. But it has an almost cult film following. The franchise has the classic cheese of 80-90s with enough gore to satisfy any gorehound. But what shines most is the kills. Brutal. Everyone has a favorite. So let's hope the reboot can bring back that magic, or even surpass it. Unfortunately, we do not have a release date. Most likely a spring release.
