Spiral: From the Book of Saw Trailer

By RodneyHatfieldJr for Movies

We have heard the news about this project for almost 2 years. Today, we finally get a trailer. Spiral: From the Book of Saw has released a new trailer for the Saw reboot that isn't really a reboot(don’t feel bad, I’m not completely clear on this either.), and it teases the return of a classic series trap.

In the film, Chris Rock stars as detective Detective Ezekiel 'Zeke' Banks, who is on the hunt for a killer who is targeting cops in a grisly case that has a potential link to the Jigsaw Killer. And it looks like the case isn't the only thing with nods to the past, as the film's latest trailer shows some of the links the movie will also have to the original Saw film.

In one scene in the new trailer, a picture of John Kramer – aka the Jigsaw Killer – is seen on a police desk. Kramer made his debut in the first film of the series, and he later appeared in all of the franchise's subsequent sequels. In another scene, Rock's character Zeke is seen with his hand handcuffed to a pipe as he picks up a handsaw that's been left for him. Of course, fans of the first Saw movie will remember the scene in which Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) has to saw off his own foot to escape a trap, hinting that Spiral: From the Book of Saw may be about to put Zeke in a similar position. But please for the love of God, if there is a phone, put it far enough away so you can’t reach it with the hacksaw like the original. Poor Lawrence so smart, but too dumb to use the hacksaw to pull the phone those few centimeters closer. FYI, that is the only huge plothole/glaring ignorance of the original.

The synopsis is as follows: Working in the shadow of his father, an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel 'Zeke' Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city's gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer's morbid game.

The film was recently given the earlier release date of Friday, May 14 in the US. This is being produced by the original Saw team of Mark Burg and Oren Koules and stars Chris Rock, Samuel L Jackson, Max Minghella, and Marisol Nichols. Unfortunately, our UK family will have to wait a little longer to see Spiral, due to the current coronavirus restrictions. Spiral will be released here on Monday, May 17. That is the same day UK indoor cinemas are expected to re-open to customers.
