Universal’s Renfield Announced

By RodneyHatfieldJr for Movies

I have been a fan of the Renfield character ever since I saw Dwight Fry’s version in the 1931 Dracula. And being a fan, I have always wondered why we didn’t get any stories/movies/TV shows about the character. He is so fascinating, like the veil of insanity is pulled back and we get a small glimpse into the demented mind.

Universal Studios is still trying to whet their appetite for a reimagining of its golden-era monster movies. The studio has found its star with Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road). Even though they keep reimagining monsters and keep being utter failures. Like other remakes/dumpster fires, there is still a strong audience for the legendary monster movies of the golden era of Hollywood. Renfield will be directed by Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War) and written by Ryan Ridley (Rick and Morty).

Renfield is a monster movie centered around Dracula’s henchman, R.M. Renfield, who in Bram Stoker’s original 1897 novel was an inmate at a lunatic asylum who was thought to be suffering from delusions but was actually a servant of the vampire. McKay’s film is expected to take place in the present-day, much like Leigh Whannell‘s Invisible Man movie starring Elisabeth Moss.

Initially Universal Studios had envisioned a “Dark Universe” series of reboots with the studio’s library of classic monsters. But after the commercial failure of The Mummy. The studio reassessed its strategy. Though Universal is committed to developing filmmaker-driven projects based on the creatures of yesteryear. Leigh Whannell is currently developing a Wolfman reimagining starring Ryan Gosling.

Nicholas Hoult is likely best known for Warm Bodies, Mad Max: Fury Road, and X-men: Dark Phoenix, but the young actor has recently turned in some strong performances in Tolkien and the True History of the Kelly Gang.
